ROUTE GUIDELINES
This website is intended to be a bucket list of the best routes in the world, and celebrating the fastest known times (FKTs) on those routes. It’s a continuing work in progress, and we rely on the community to help grow our collection of routes in order to create a resource for all to enjoy.
Do you have a route in mind that you think should be included? We’d love to hear from you! Please bear in mind the following guidelines before submitting your route here >>
Length
Routes must be at least 100km long as a minimum, in line with the generally accepted view of what counts as ‘ultra distance’. There is no upper limit.
Surface
A route can be on any surface: road, off-road, gravel, snow or otherwise.
Shape
A route can be ‘linear’ or ‘circular’. Where a route is ‘circular’, i.e consists of a loop that starts and finishes at the same place, the rider may start/finish at any point in the loop, as long as the full route is completed.
Accessibility
Routes should begin and end at logical points. For instance this could be a landmark, the trailhead, end of named trail, or a distinct geographical feature. Bonus points if there is a train station near to the start and/or finish, or encourages accessibility by public transport.
Established and Fixed
Routes should be established as a recognised fixed route. This ensures that routes have been designed purposefully with beautiful scenery, safety and logic in mind. Perhaps the route has historical or cultural merits, or a history of competition within an annual grand depart. We recognise that not every route will meet all of these standards, but this is what we will aim for when evaluating route submissions for inclusion on the website.
Private Land
Routes should not traverse private land except in circumstances where this has been authorised by the landowner. If a permit is required to access the route, evidence of this should be submitted alongside an FKT attempt. Unless the route is a well established route, we discourage actively seeking to include private land in new routes.
